The Lounge Chair - RDW01 (1962/2025)

Introduction

The original lounge chair - RDW01 was designed in 1962 by Roger De Winter. As an architect and master builder, he offered it exclusively and very selectively to his own clients. As a result, production during these years remained limited to a few dozen copies.

Six decades later, the concept is revived by De Winter Design. The original design has been carefully respected and redeveloped to meet contemporary requirements. It has been put back into production and since May 2025, the lounge chair - RDW01 is being offered freely for sale for the first time.

A design apart

The elegant design is based on a simple circular form and has been developed to create a balanced ensemble. The design is not a compromise between form and function, it is a combination of both. It exudes simplicity and serenity and still appears fresh and modern today.

On the precisely curved steel frame rest transverse slats of polished aluminum that contrast with the cushion.

The hand-welded joints testify to attention to detail. The inclination can be adjusted according to wishes for a personalized seating experience.

Modern development

The original design underwent a thorough technical analysis. For this, the prototype that the architect had made for himself was used. Plans from Roger De Winter's archives were also consulted.

Each element was evaluated with today's quality requirements, production techniques, and materials as the starting point.

Several owners of other original copies were consulted regarding the use of the lounge chair. Thanks to this additional perspective, the concept could be further refined.

Result

Although Roger De Winter's basic concept remains completely intact, some optimizations have been made thanks to modern production techniques.

The chrome-plated steel support creates a floating effect thanks to integrated plastic feet.
The spacing between the aluminum slats progressively increases from the center of gravity of the furniture.
The matching footrest has been slightly modified to better adapt to the curved shape of the lounge chair, giving the whole a more balanced appearance.

After testing several prototypes, the redesign was finalized. The whole is more solid and comfort has been improved.

The result is a subtly refined design that respects the original and preserves its spirit. A design that meets modern requirements for quality and comfort, composed of high-quality materials. It is ready to be passed down to the next generation.

Seat cushion

The ergonomics of the design is reinforced by the seat cushion. Each copy is handmade in the Master Interior workshop. The content of the cushion is made of high-quality dense foam. The leather is precisely cut and hand-sewn. The radius of the cushion deliberately differs from the frame, which allows the profile to be well followed while maintaining its comfortable crumpling. This subtle freedom allows the foam to achieve optimal comfort. The height of the headrest is adjustable according to preferences.

Leather: origin, culture, and animal welfare

The premium natural leather from Belgian partner Stolz combines quality and ecological responsibility - exceptionally soft, durable, and easy to maintain. Traceability guarantees the certified correct origin.

This leather comes from bull hides from Norway, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Climate and diet create ideal conditions for quality leather. In these regions, cattle grow in green pastures and enjoy good stables and good nutrition. This respectful treatment gives a pure and consistent product. Strict European legislation ensures optimal living conditions. Local processing reduces environmental impact. The leather is a by-product: no animal was specially raised for it.

Belgian craftsmanship

The entire process is Belgian: from design, suppliers and materials used, to production and distribution.

The RDW01 is not just a beautiful piece of furniture, it's also a distinctive piece that tells a story.
