An unfinished chapter

Jan De WinterJan De Winter

De Winter Design was founded by Jan De Winter in homage to his grandfather, architect Roger De Winter. As a master builder, Roger designed a series of interior pieces that harmonize perfectly with the modernist style of the houses he built in the 1950s to 70s. In keeping with his singular character, these pieces were offered exclusively and selectively to his clients.

De Winter Design today makes the little-known furniture creations available again for lovers of timeless design, thus offering a tangible and authentic continuation of the architect's work.

Roger De Winter as a Furniture Designer

RDW used an integrated approach - a total concept - where beyond the construction of the house, the design of the interior in its entirety through each of the individual pieces was an integral part of the project. During the first phase of his career, each of these was often designed as unique pieces, belonging to a specific house.

It was only in the second half of the 50s that De Winter developed some standalone furniture pieces, independently of the environment where they would be integrated. They already reveal the style of the following period of his career: the 60s.

The ideas were refined and developed into a small limited series. They only found their place in projects where the architect himself envisioned them. Very few pieces were manufactured. The fact that some of them are still used daily by the children and grandchildren of the original clients speaks for itself.

Ideal Environment

Roger De Winter left a strong impression on Jan as a child. Later, his interest in his grandfather's work grew and he began to explore his architectural heritage.

The fascination intensified when Jan had the opportunity to occupy Roger De Winter's family home in Vilvoorde. In this modernist masterpiece, which also housed the architectural office, the interior pieces were designed at the time.

With the creation of De Winter Design at the same address, the circle is complete. Living and working here constitutes a powerful source of inspiration.

Authentic yet new - new yet authentic

The unique furniture pieces formed an extension of De Winter's characteristic style: functional and elegant, eccentric yet pure. This aspect of his architecture remained little known and was not marketed by RDW himself. It was an unfinished chapter.

The designs are timeless and fit perfectly into today's design world. Jan therefore decided to tie up the loose ends and give new life to the authentic furniture collection.

The archive and the original pieces

To this end, a long journey was undertaken, beginning with a careful examination of the plan archives, which are still entirely held by the architect's family. In order to interpret these plans accurately, several original pieces were located, pieces still used today by (the family of) Roger De Winter's clientele. All available information from original and current users was collected and recorded. The smooth cooperation and enthusiasm we encountered were impressive. This became a source of great value for the reissue.

It was decided to work under own management, hence the creation of De Winter Design. Subsequently, a thorough market study was conducted and partners passionate about quality and craftsmanship were selected.
